How To Remove Car Odors

There is nothing more frustrating than trying to remove odor from your car.

Weather you just purchased the vehicle or were lucky enough to inherit grandpa’s smoke mobile now you need to remove the smell of cigarette smoke from your new best friend.

Okay now it’s time to get to work…Remove any ashes, cigarette butts, cigars, smoke smell items.

Air the car out with all the windows down sitting in full sun if possible for all day.

Replace your cabin filter. Some vehicles will not have a cabin filter so you’ll want to check your car’s make and model to see where the filter is located. Usually it’s under or behind the glove box, requiring a screw driver and flashlight.

Clean around the weatherstripping around the windows and all the way around each door removing as much cigarette tar as possible.

Eliminate odor in the headliner using an odor neutralizer specifically for cigarette smoke odor. Saturate the material heavy enough to treat the odor at the source, so make sure it gets as deep as the smoke did.

Make sure you clean all around the sun visors, open the mirror flap and clean both sides of the plastic.

Remove the head rest and wipe clean all the surfaces under and around the head rest.

One of the most important things that gets over looked the most when removing car odors is the seat belt. Pull the safety belt all the way out and wipe clean both sides of the fabric.

The seat belt can hold lots of smoke smell in the fabric and since it’s coiled up during most deodorizer treatments it often times goes unnoticed until after.

Remove odor from all fabric and seats. Make sure you fold the seats down and clean all around each seat to naturalize any lingering odor.

Clean all the carpet and floor mats. As the smoke molecules fall from the air they will embed into the fibers of the fabric. Those smoke molecules will need to be broken down and naturalized at their source to prevent the return of odor.

Clean all plastic materials dash board arm rest. Use an odor removal product that can cut through tough nicotine tar buildup.

Treat all leather materials with care and caution. These types of material can absorb smoke smell and release the gas as the car warms up in the sun.

Don’t forget to clean inside the trunk area and around the spare tire.

Clean the vents and inside the ventilation system as best you can reach. This is the first material air will hit when coming out of your AC / Heater.

You may want to try using banking soda or air fresheners to mask the smells. Otherwise you will need to treat each odor molecule at it’s source or it will continue to off gas causing the odor again.
